The year 1850 was carefully chosen, as it represented the conclusion of a distinct perionof exploration and European colonial expansion. By 1850, with the exception of Central Afica, the map of the world bore for the first time a strong resemblance to its current form. The indexes here provide the names of over 3000 travellers and 1000 ships, while the bibliographies cite more than 10,000 works of reference.
