Photography in Colonial Australia: The Mechanical Eye and the Illustrated Book

Examines the Australian books of the nineteenth century that use original photographs as a means of illustration. Divided into two parts, the first is an historical survey, which examines issues such as colonisation through photography, and whether the photographer should act as artist or mere mirror. The second focuses on a range of photographic genres; including royalty, Aborigines, exploration and travel, science, and art.
